My three visually challenged mice

Katie, Sam and Joe (right) sporting their natty, new specs

Watching the TV as a family these days has taken an odd turn. When everyone is looking at the screen, I find myself glimpsing the faces around me because I am now surrounded by the visually challenged.

Hubbie – Chris – has always been short-sighted but was our only family member requiring be-spectaclement. Or so I thought.

It started with our eldest, 15-year-old Joe, complaining that he was struggling to see the blackboard at school and so when I booked him in to see our local optician, I took Katie, our youngest, along because she had also raised concerns about her vision. Much to my surprise, it turned out they both need glasses, Joe for most of the time would you believe? In fact the optician was a little short with me and said he had probably needed them for years, which made me feel great. As I said to her, he is the No. 1 tennis seed at school and a member of the hockey team, not to mention an able student and musician. So who knew?

Given that I hadn't spotted Joe and Katie's sight problems, I thought I would get Sam – 13 – checked out a week later, even though he didn't think he had any problems and, you guessed it, he needed glasses too. So there you have it: three blind mice. How did I not spot this? Why was I so blind to their fuzzy world? As a mother, you feel responsible for everything that happens or should have happened to your family. Still, none of them seemed the least bit bothered and Joe is delighted with the improvement of his sight, so all's well that ends well. I got there in the end.

  1. I was 12 when I first got glasses and I think my mum felt bad that I was blind as a bat and she hadn't realized. I knew, but I didn't want to mention it because I didn't want NHS glasses (which in those days were pretty hideous).

  2. I always think people with glasses look especially intelligent. So that's a bonus!

  3. Thank you so much for your comments. I agree I think they look great in their glasses especially Sam (in the middle) with his Mad men retro look, which were a great choice but apparently he's getting called 'Granny' at school. I did have their eyes tested when they were 4 when I was told they all had perfect sight. So from then things have degenerated, I found myself wondering if computers and TV had played a part in all this?

  5. I usually believe individuals with eyeglasses appear particularly smart. Therefore this is a reward!
